Fort Cherry School District is a small, rural public school district located in southwestern Pennsylvania. It covers a portion of suburban Pittsburgh and some outlying rural areas. The district serves students in a area that includes the towns of McDonald and Midway and the village of Hickory, as well as the townships of Robinson and Mount Pleasant. According to a 2008 local census, it serves a resident population of 8,878. The residents' per capita income was $17,963, while median family income was $45,688. According to District officials, in school year 2007-08 the Fort Cherry School District provided basic educational services to 1,236 pupils through the employment of 95 teachers, 16 full-time and part-time support personnel, and 9 administrators. Fort Cherry School District received more than $8.9 million in state funding in school year 2007-08. ==History== Established in 1959, this area was previously a fort created and inhabited by Tom Cherry and his family. This fort was eventually torn down to create Fort Cherry High School, with Fort Cherry Elementary Center eventually being added next to the high school.
